The Presidents of Mozambique and Namibia want to strengthen “economic diplomacy” between the two countries, with plans to create a joint economic commission, said Daniel Chapo on Monday, highlighting the “excellent relations” in political diplomacy.
“We have come to the conclusion that we need to strengthen economic diplomacy between the two countries so that the private sector in Mozambique and Namibia can further strengthen our relations of friendship and cooperation in the economic sphere,” said Daniel Chapo, President of Mozambique, during a press conference in Maputo after a meeting with his Namibian counterpart, Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa.
According to the Mozambican head of state, the two presidents concluded that it is also important to form a joint economic commission to assess the situation in both countries with a view to improving economic cooperation.
“We have come to the conclusion that we must take action. We have already talked, we have already written, so we must take action and, therefore, we are going to organise a business forum between the two countries, involving the private sector, so that Mozambican and Namibian businesspeople can meet,” said Chapo.
The President of Mozambique gave an “extremely positive” assessment of the visit by his Namibian counterpart, Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa, who in turn reiterated the importance of a joint struggle for the financial independence of the two countries.
“From a political point of view, Namibia and Mozambique are at their best in terms of cooperation (…). But today, here and now, we need to do the same with economic independence, with the economic struggle,” said the Namibian President.
The stateswoman also said that by July, Mozambique and Namibia should have “clear directions” on the steps to be taken for better economic cooperation, and that it should be the mission of the joint commission to assess the different sectors, including energy, trade, transport, mineral resources, agriculture and tourism.
Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa arrived in Mozambique yesterday for a working visit and visited the Maputo thermoelectric power station in the afternoon, according to a statement from the Mozambique Electricity Company (EDM).
