The port of Nacala, in Nampula province, witnessed the arrival, last week, of the first cabotage vessel transporting various goods as part of the relaunch of the interconnection of national ports.
The coastal shipping [“cabotage”] project was resumed with the aim of boosting inter-provincial trade, reducing logistics costs, decongesting roads and boosting business in the ports.
Unaite Mustafa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority (ITRANSMAR), witnessed the arrival of the vessel Prince, belonging to Moçambique Dugongo, transporting construction cement produced in its factory in the province of Maputo.
Mustafa told ‘Notícias’ that the initiative represents an opportunity for cargo that is currently transported mostly by road to be transferred to the sea, which will reduce the flow of trucks on the road and, consequently, mitigate the number of road accidents involving goods vehicles.
Mustafa encouraged the private sector to transfer cargo currently transported by road to maritime cabotage, since each vessel will, in principle, make three trips per month.
Administrator for the Operations Area of Dugongo Moçambique, Issufo Aly, said that the vessel’s return to Maputo was scheduled for the weekend, going on to explain that work is underway to create cargo consolidation points for goods to ensure that the vessels do not return empty.
Still in Nacala, the parties visited the construction works of the new cement plant of the company Moçambique Dugongo Cimentos, which is expected to produce just over 13 thousand tons of cement per month.
With the amount of cement to be produced in that region of the country, the plant intends to take advantage of the Port of Nacala to export the product to hinterland countries such as Malawi and Zambia, in addition to taking the material to various parts of Mozambique.
