Nacala Logistics on Tuesday delivered 15,000 Covid-19 tests to health authorities in Nampula province in a ceremony attended by the Director of Provincial Services for Social Affairs, Munira Abudou, and Nacala Logistics General Cargo Administrator, Nadir Amad.
The donation realises a memorandum of understanding signed by Nacala Logistics shareholder Vale and the Mozambican government in April, which promises US$2 million to help fight the new coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking at the ceremony, Provincial Director of Social Services Munira Abudou thanked the company for its support, saying that Covid-19 could only be beaten with the involvement of all.
“We have a lot to thank Nacala Logistics for. This help comes at a time when a sero-epidemiological survey is taking place in Nampula, and will increase our research capacity. We will be able to expand the study to several more locations, mainly regions with greater predictability. This is only part of the support: we have already received two batches, and I know that more are on the way,” he said.
Director of Nacala Logistics Nadir Amad said that Nacala Logistics was aware of the challenges that the country faced, which is why the company had joined in the fight against the pandemic.
“In line with our motto, “Amor à Vida”, we are offering hospital supplies, individual protection gear and disinfection material to various entities along the Nacala Corridor. Today, we are donating 15,000 kits to help the sero-epidemiological survey track people who may have been exposed to the virus,” Nadir Amad said.
Nacala Logistics will shortly donate 5,000 test kits to help Niassa province combat the coronavirus epidemic there.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Nacala Logistics has proactively adopted several preventative measures in order to ensure the safety of its employees and the communities close to the railroad along the Nacala Corridor. Among other procedures, it implemented a home office regime for administrative workers, a daily checklist to assess the health status of each employee, temperature measurements for all those who access the company’s facilities, a reduction in the passenger capacity of carriages and cancellation of non-essential travel and face-to-face meetings until the situation normalises.
Nacala Logistics reaffirms its commitment to doing everything possible to protect the health and safety of employees and communities close to its operations, and calls on everyone to comply with the preventative measures recommended by the Mozambican health authorities and the World Health Organization.
