Nacala Customs recently seized several items of mining machinery which had been imported using false documents to evade taxes – an operation which, if successful, would have cost the Mozambican state 5.6 million meticais.
The seized material belongs to a mining company which operates in Nampula province. It is thought that the customs broker responsible for the transaction falsified the paperwork to take advantage of the tax exemption status of another concern.
The director of Nacala Customs, João Saltiel, said that the documents submitted were in the name of DH Mining Development Lda, a firm exempt from duties within the scope of the Nacala Special Economic Zone (ZEEN).
