The district of Mutarara, in Tete, this year registered a sharp (88%) decline in the production and commercialization of sesame, a key cash crop in this part of the province.
The situation is attributed to irregular rainfall caused by the El Niño climatic phenomenon, which this year severely affected this part of Tete province.
The Director of Economic Activity Services in Mutarara revealed that the district had
expected to produce and sell more than 3,500 tons of sesame, but due to the weather, only 413 tons were sold.
Biaca Quezene said that the El Niño phenomenon had led to the loss of 420 hectares of
sesame, directly impacting more than 400 producers.
With this amount of sesame sold, the more-than 8,500 sesame producers in Mutarara
would have received only about 27 million meticais.
