The High Commissioner of India in Mozambique, Rajeev Kumar, said yesterday that, although the volume of business between the two countries continued to grow, Mozambique must put an end to the kidnapping of entrepreneurs if it was to attract more investors.
Trade between Mozambique and India “was €1,200 million in 2016,” the diplomat noted, “and we are now at €2,400 million: certainly [the abductions] did not affect business”, but added that “this [kidnapping] problem has to be solved to encourage more people to enter the country”.
Among the entrepreneurs rescued from kidnapping this year was Indian philanthropist Rizwan Adatia, who spent 21 days in captivity in Boane, southern Mozambique.
High Commissioner Kumar said the rescue of Adatia was proof of the commitment of the Mozambican authorities to upholding the law.
According to the High Commissioner, Rizwan Adatia is currently in India, but plans to return to Mozambique.
“Rizwan Adatia is coming back. He left because he has nothing to do here during the pandemic, and he had to stay at home. He did not leave [Mozambique] out of fear [of abduction],” he said.
Since the beginning of the year, Mozambican authorities have recorded a total of nine abductions of businessmen or their family members.
