The Municipality of Maputo loses an average of one million meticais per month in unpaid fines, applied to commercial establishments operating outside of permitted hours and generating noise pollution. In the last three months, over three million cases have been brought to court.
Addressing the municipal stance on the operation of commercial establishments is not new, but there is a problem. The law is completely ignored. Therefore, the Municipal Police of the City of Maputo took to the streets this Saturday to warn vendors who keep their establishments open outside the permitted hours and create noise pollution.
Due to non-compliance with municipal policy, some establishments even had to close because they were operating outside the established opening hours.
According to municipal authorities, there is awareness, however, everything is just an attempt, as disobedience is recurrent. Even though fines are imposed, what goes into the municipality’s coffers is very little.
The municipal stance determines that commercial establishments within markets must close at 7:00 p.m., and those outside the market at 9:00 p.m.
