Begging on the streets of Maputo has led the Mozambican government to create a multi-sectoral social assistance team in an effort to curb the problem, it was announced on Thursday.
“As a government, we recognize that begging is not the result of individual choice but a consequence of structural inequalities,” said Vicente Joaquim, Secretary of State for the city of Maputo, during the launch of the assistance campaign in Maputo.
The team, made up of the municipal council, the police, and justice administration agencies, will develop awareness-raising activities to provide the necessary assistance to these people.
According to the Mozambican government, the campaign will also cover homeless people.
Begging in Maputo, a municipality with about one million inhabitants – three times that number in the capital’s metropolitan area – is a growing social problem, according to authorities.
Recent surveys reportedly estimated that around 500 people live on the streets in Maputo.
