The Mozambican government is considering pardoning fines and interest valued at 23.6 billion meticais (EUR 28.7 million) dating from 2011 to 2018, Economy and Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane has said.
“The pardon will require a Law Relative to the Exceptional Regime of Tax Debts Regularisation allowing the forgiveness of interest and fines only, since the burden of the net tax debt will continue,” Minister Maleiane explained during a parliamentary hearing.
After the approval of the law, the debtor taxpayers will have a period of one year to regularise their situation. If they miss the deadline, they will lose the tax benefit.
Minister Maleiane said that the measure would relieve of the burden on the state of excessive accumulated tax debts, fines and interest, and other expenses related to tax foreclosures, and encourage taxpayers to come to terms with the tax system, thereby improving the overall business environment in the country.
