Mozambican musician Cheny Wa Gune presents at 8:00 p.m. this Friday (21-02) in the Sala Grande of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre, a concert called “M’Saho” – A Musical Journey Between Tradition And Innovation. In this innovative show, the musician proposes a fusion between the tradition of the timbila and the contemporaneity of modern instruments, creating a rich and dynamic sound universe.
In “M’Saho”, Cheny Wa Gune intends to pay homage to the legacy, while reinventing it, exploring new sound possibilities without losing the essence of tradition, highlighting musical sharing and creativity.
Cheny Wa Gune is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, producer and researcher of traditional Mozambican instruments, such as the timbila, mbira, chitende, chigovia and drums. Born on August 1, 1980, in Maputo, and a member of a family of musicians from Inhambane, he began his musical journey in 1992 at the Novos Raios School of Singing and Dance.
During his career, he was a founding member of the band Timbila Muzimba, with which he toured several times nationally and internationally. In 2007, he began his solo career with the Cheny Wa Gune Quartet, performing at festivals in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
In addition to his artistic career, he is a student and monitor in the Music course at the School of Communication and Arts at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), is a member of the TP50 Band and is the curator of the Mozambican Music portal. He also teaches percussion at the Xiquitsi Music Project, playing an essential role in the preservation and innovation of traditional Mozambican music.
Cheny Wa Gune is one of the most important players on the list of timbila players, an instrument recognized by UNESCO in 2005 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The timbila is a symbol of the identity of the Chope people, originally from Zavala, in the province of Inhambane, southern Mozambique.
