Mozal, an aluminium smelting company based in Matola-Rio municipality, Boane district, Maputo province, is investing 71 million meticais (around US$1.1 million) building two crucial bridges in the neighbourhoods of Juba and Jonasse.
Led by the mayor of Matola-Rio, Abdul Gafur, and the Mozal CEO, Samuel Samo Gudo, the laying of the first stone took place on Tuesday, in a well-attended ceremony which marked the start of the works, expected to last a little over five months.
Speaking to the Jonasse community that turned out en masse for the event, including residents, ‘régulos’ [chieftains], traditional authorities and other government structures, Samo Gudo said that the project reaffirmed Mozal’s commitment to building infrastructure for community development in Maputo province.
According to the source, the two infrastructures will be on the stretch of road that connects Beluluane to the Chinonanquila neighbourhood [Kilometre 16].
“Valued at 71.6 million meticais, an amount fully financed by Mozal, the works will benefit around 71,000 residents in the Jonasse and Juba neighbourhoods, in the Vila da Matola-Rio Municipality, Maputo province,” Gudo said.
He said that the construction of the two bridges would improve road communications for local communities, especially during rainy periods, as well as boost the economic development of the region and ease road traffic along the Mozal road, allowing greater traffic flexibility.
In turn, Mayor, Abdul Gafur, stressed that construction of the infrastructure was crucial to ensure the interconnection of families in the Chinonanquila, Juba, Jonasse, Beluluane neighbourhoods and beyond.
“This investment will not only improve the quality of life of our population, but also boost the development of our town. It represents our firm commitment to ensuring better conditions and safety for all our residents,” the mayor of Matola-Rio said.
He recalled that during the rainy season, communities face serious difficulties in getting around, becoming isolated and seeing their daily routines profoundly affected.
As a municipality, “we have a duty to find concrete solutions to minimize these challenges. It was with this purpose that the municipality of Matola-Rio entered into a strategic partnership with the company Mozal for the construction of these two bridges over the KM16-Beleluane road”, Gafur said.
The project is part of Mozal’s social responsibility strategy and aims to respond to the difficulties faced by communities during the rainy season.
