A Brazilian woman serving a 10-year sentence for drug trafficking in Mozambique will be transferred to Brazil today in the first-ever CPLP (Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries) prisoner transfer.
In a statement quoted by the Lusa agency, Mozambique’s National Penitentiary Service (SERNAP) says that Érica Teixeira will serve the remainder of her sentence close to her family in Brazil under the CPLP Convicted Persons Transfer Agreement.
The statement points out that transfers require the consent of both the individual and his or her country of origin.
SERNAP notes that this is the first prisoner transfer not only between Mozambique and Brazil but among all the countries of the CPLP, and that the measure aims at the “humanization” of sentences passed.
