The morgues at the Maputo Central Hospital, José Macamo General Hospital and the Michafutene Municipal Cemetery are full, as a result of families being unable to bury their loved ones during the demonstrations.
“We have, at city level, morgues at the central hospital, the José Macamo hospital, Mavalane hospital and the municipal cemetery of Michafutene. All these morgues are full because families were unable to carry out their burials during this period,” councilLor for health and social action in the Municipality of Maputo, Alice de Abreu, said.
On Saturday, the process of moving bodies from the morgue at Maputo Central Hospital to that of the Michafutene cemetery was being carried out, the latter having greater capacity.
Due to the burials taking place at the Michafutene Cemetery, the morgue there was able to receive a further 34 bodies on Saturday morning.
“This was also possible because, at the Michafutene Cemetery, different from what is usual, a little more than 34 burials were carried out. The average number of burials we have at the Michafutene Cemetery is usually around 12, but today we will carry out approximately 34,” she said.
Alice de Abreu also shared that efforts are being made to ensure that all burials can take place, as “there is a lot of pressure”. “We have teams organized to ensure that families carry out the ceremonies here, or in Michafutene, or any other cemetery,” she explained.
Councillor de Abreu added that the previous three days “have created very serious constraints, due to the pressure to preserve the bodies”.
The Michafutene Cemetery has an average of six burials a day, but on Saturday, the councillor said, it had scheduled ten.
