Mozambican jazz saxophonist, composer, and producer Moreira Chonguiça will be on stage on Saturday, 25 February, for the third edition of the Bob Collymore Foundation International Jazz Festival in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
Chonguiça’s participation in the event is part of the festival’s mission to promote the creations of internationally renowned African artists in jazz, in addition to bringing together musicians from the diaspora who stand out in this genre.
In addition to Chonguiça, the festival will feature performances by Kenyan collectives Ghetto Classics, Judah & The Tribe, The Kaima Mwiti Quintet and DJ D-Lite, as well as the Ethiopian band Béga Quartet and the German saxophonist, singer and composer Stephanie Lottermoser.
Moreira Chonguiça and his band are currently preparing for their performance at the Rádio Moçambique (RM) auditorium in Maputo. The last rehearsal session, held on Monday, was dedicated to paying tribute to Mozambican Heroes, in the context of the celebration of February 3rd.
Created in 2023, the Bob Collymore Foundation International Jazz Festival has been a prominent platform for African and international jazz artists. This year’s edition marks the first time that a musician from a Portuguese-speaking country has played at the festival.
Moreira Conguiça graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he obtained a degree in musicology and jazz performance. With seven albums released between 2006 and 2022, some of his works, such as ‘The Moreira Project’, ‘Sensasons’ and ‘M&M’ – the latter in collaboration with Cameroonian Manu Dibango – have received worldwide recognition and several awards.
