More and more women are attending Technical and Vocational Education (ETP) institutions in Nampula, according to the head of the Office of the Secretary of State in the province, Tomé Shakushasha.
Speaking yesterday at the launch of the National Week of Technical and Vocational Education (ETP), Shakushasha noted that 9,591 of the 16,205 trainees enrolled in 35 institutions in this education subsystem are women. Eight of the 35 educational ETP schools are public, seven are semi-public and 20 are private.
Shakushasha said the increase in women in ETP represents a historic change and reflects the ongoing efforts of the government and various organisations to promote gender equality and access to technical education.
This increase is particularly notable in courses traditionally dominated by men, such as electricity, mechanics and civil construction.
The official indicated that the subsector benefits young people and society in general, as it equips them with the skills for self-employment in the face of unemployment in the province.
He highlighted that the growing awareness of the employment opportunities that ETP can provide has been one of the driving factors behind the greater participation of girls in relation to men.
He emphasised that the participation of women in this sub sector of education is positive and brings hope for socio-economic development, while challenging gender stereotypes.
With more girls opting for technical areas, Nampula is expected to soon have a generation of highly qualified women ready to actively contribute to Mozambique’s growth, he said.
The National Week of Technical and Professional Education is taking place under the motto “For a Quality and Inclusive Professional Education that Responds to the Expectations of the Productive Sector”.
