At the end of 2023, Mozambique had more than 9,000 religious establishments, accounting for almost half of the employees working for institutions designated as ‘non-profits’ in the country, according to official figures.
According to a report by the National Statistics Institute (INE) consulted today by Lusa, there were 9,064 religious denominations operating as non-profit institutions in Mozambique at the end of last year. There were also a further 3,235 associations of different types and 132 foundations.
The number of religious denominations registered as individual statistical units throughout the country remained practically unchanged compared to 2022, but the number of people employed grew by 8.6% in one year.
In 2022, these workers amounted to 43,489, equivalent to 4.3% of the total number of workers (1,012,415) in the country. At the end of 2023, this number had risen to 47,228 workers, equivalent to 4.6% of the total of 1,037,863.
Associations employed 51,414 workers and foundations, 1,880.
The Mozambican parliament had scheduled a debate on a proposed law on religious freedom and worship this year, but it did not move forward.
Data from international organisations indicated that the Christian religion, more predominant in the south, is followed by 55.8% of the Mozambican population, while 17.5% are Muslims, mainly living in the north.
