Mozambique connected more than 560,000 new households to electricity in 2024, achieving coverage of 60% of the population with access to electricity, according to official figures.
According to data from the Ministry of Finance’s 2024 budget execution report, 563,833 new household connections were established in Mozambique as part of the expansion of electricity, 395,622 of which were through the national grid and 170,171 through isolated systems.
“The rate of the population with access to electricity rose from 53.4% in 2023 to 60.1% by 2024,” the document reads.
The report adds that in 2024, the first 40 kilometres “of the backbone of the 400 KW high voltage electricity transmission system” were built, which “will connect the north to the south of the country, comprising the Temane, Maputo, Chimuara – Alto Molócue sections, “corresponding to a 100% achievement of the planned target”.
The previous president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi – Daniel Chapo was sworn in as the new president on 15 January – on 2 May set the goal of completing the electrification of all the country’s administrative offices by December 2024 and ensuring that 10 million Mozambicans have access to electricity for the first time.
Filipe Nyusi said that, under the “Energy for All” programme, the goal is to “allow all administrative offices to be electrified” by the “end of 2024”, after the electrification “in the last century of all district offices” in the country.
“Our goal is for the coverage rate [of the country’s population] to reach 64%, ensuring that 10 million Mozambicans have electricity for the first time,” said the then head of state.
