More than 2,500 workers have died as a result of terrorist attacks in Cabo-Delgado province, general secretary of the OTM- Central Trade Union, Alexandre Munguambe, said on International Labour Day in Nampula.
Alexandre Munguambe also noted that just over 714,000 workers had been displaced by the conflict.
In the face of these adversities, the OTM urged the government to find ways to stop such situations arising.
Munguambe pointed out that there was widespread solidarity with the victims of terrorist attacks in Cabo-Delgado, and of the Military Junta in the centre of the country.
“Let us remember that, among compatriots in difficult situations, we include workers who have lost their jobs. The trade union movement is in solidarity with the victims of terrorism armed attacks by the Renamo Military Junta and climate events, and encourages the government to find the best way to end the suffering of our fellow citizens,” Munguambe said.
This year, May Day – International Workers’ Day – was celebrated under the motto: “Trade unions together in the fight for well-being, peace and progress”.
