More than 200 industrial units and 400 commercial establishments affected by rebel attacks in Cabo Delgado since 2017 have now reopened, the provincial governor announced.
“206 industrial units destroyed by extremism, out of the 295 affected [have reopened],” Governor Valige Tauabo said during the opening of the 16th edition of the Cabo Delgado Economic Fair.
Governor Tauabo also said that, out of the 643 commercial establishments affected by the armed conflict, a total of 439 were also recovered, in addition to 79 factories, out of the 120 affected by Tropical Cyclone Chido in that province last December.
Cabo Delgado, located in the north of the country and rich in gas, has been facing an armed rebellion since 2017, which has caused thousands of deaths and a humanitarian crisis, with more than a million people displaced.
New extremist movements in northern Mozambique include Niassa, a neighbouring province of Cabo Delgado, where, since its outbreak on April 29, at least two forest rangers have been killed and beheaded.
