More than 150 tons of rice produced in the current agricultural season in Bilene district, Gaza province, could deteriorate to the point of being unsellable, due to the lack of marketing opportunities.
The claim is made by family producers [smallholder farmers] who still have the rice at home and are trying to sell it in small quantities, which they say is unprofitable.
The director of District Services for Economic Activities in Bilene, Valdemar Ndeve, blames the lack of local cereal processing units and the low purchase price offered by factories in other districts.
”Wambo says that at the moment it is not receiving [rice to process]. Famosa is taking it, but does not pay an amount which satisfies the producers,” he said.
The Secretary of State for Gaza province, Amosse Macamo, met the Bilene producers and recommended that they become more organised so as to facilitate the resolution of this and other problems related to agricultural production.
