The reopening of the Zimpeto Wholesale Market in Maputo, initially scheduled for yesterday, has been rescheduled for today due to setbacks in the start of the cleaning and reorganisation of the site.
According to the Councillor for Economic Activities in Maputo Municipality, Alexandre Muianga, the resistance of some vendors to leaving the premises delayed the start of the work and made it impossible to complete it within the set deadline.
O mercado Grossista do Zimpeto voltou a abrir portas na tarde desta quarta-feira, depois de ter fechado por dois dias para o processo de limpeza e arrumação.

Muianga explained that, although the work was scheduled to take place between Monday and Tuesday, it was only possible to start activities on the ground in the afternoon of the first day, due to a lack of logistical conditions.
“The work should have started early, but there were delays because the vendors did not leave on time. This made it impossible to start the cleaning immediately, so there were no conditions to reopen the market on the scheduled date. We are now in the final phase, with all teams on the ground, and we believe that tomorrow (today) the area will be able to welcome traders again as normal,” explained the councillor.
The municipality revealed that, by yesterday, just over 100 tons of rubbish had been removed from the site.
