The production of official statistical information in the country is now decentralised, with the approval by the government of [three more state] institutions with competence for this purpose, Noticias reports this Tuesday. The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) has been delegated the competence to produce statistics related to mining, the Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT) those relating to tax and the National Institute of Health (INS) [those in its sector], adds the same source.
The decision was made in Maputo on Monday, at the first session of the Mozambican Superior Statistical Council, reads the report.
In addition to delegating competences to these three institutions for the production – in coordination with the National Statistics Institute (INE) – of censuses, the Superior Statistical Council analysed the National Statistics System strategic plan for 2020-2024.
At Monday’s session of the Superior Statistical Council , prime minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, underlined the need for the institutions involved in the production of censuses to ensure quality, given that statistics not only enable the government, the private sector, academics, researchers and civil society in general to track the country’s socio-economic situation accurately, but also serve as a basis for the assessment of Mozambique by international partners.
“That is why, in this context, it is very important that the national statistical system produces quality information to respond to the various imperatives, including the improvement of the mechanisms for calculating the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and, consequently, economic growth,” the prime minister said.
Speaking to journalists, the president of the National Statistics Institute (INE), Eliza Magaua, explained that, under the new paradigm, her institution [INE] will not only have the competence to continue producing censuses, but also to validate the data produced by the three other institutions [MIREME, AT and INS].
“The INE will help to train the other sectors so that, when an indicator is produced, it will be of equal reading and perception for all users interested in the matter. So while the other institutions will have the autonomy to produce indicators, the results will have to be validated by the INE, which is the governing body of the national statistical system,” Magaua explained.
