Mozambique government forces and troops sent in Rwanda to help in the fight against armed rebels in Cabo Delgado province are “committed to deactivating” pockets of insurgents in the port town of Mocímboa da Praia, but the situation is now “calm,” an officer of Mozambique’s navy said on Thursday.
“The town of Mocímboa da Praia is still calm and we remain committed to deactivating some focuses of terrorist presence,” the officer, Alexandre Sitoe, told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique, speaking from the town.
He said that the allied forces had positioned themselves along the possible escape lines of the insurgents, in order to prevent those still hiding in the town from escaping.
The rebels who managed to escape left in a rush following Sunday morning’s attack on the town, leaving behind a large quantity of military equipment and a number of items stolen from the population, he added.
