The district administrator of Mocímboa da Praia, in the Cabo Delgado province, Sérgio Domingos Cipriano, said on Tuesday that the work to rehabilitate, expand and equip the Rural Hospital of Mocimboa da Praia, which had been destroyed by terrorists, will start this year.
“The tender will be launched at the end of October, and the entire Rural Hospital will be rehabilitated, including the ward blocks that hadn’t been finished, and we’ll have all the services we had,” said Sérgio Domingos Cipriano.
The leader, who was speaking yesterday in the city of Pemba after taking part in the Provincial Executive Council Session, did not give details of the value of this investment, which is being carried out by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and recalled that the more than 120,000 inhabitants who have returned to the Palma district are currently being assisted at the health training centre, which has been rehabilitated, and also by mobile brigades.
“We’ve rehabilitated the health training centre where we’ve managed to create wards, we have basic services there to serve our population, we have a mobile clinic, which was in Montepuez, we have a rehabilitated health centre,” he added.
Even with the rehabilitation and expansion of the Mocímboa da Praia Rural Hospital, it won’t be enough to keep up with the dynamics of the population that is returning to their homes, so Sérgio Domingos Cipriano is hoping for the arrival of investors to set up private pharmacies in the district.
“In the town, we only need a minimum of four pharmacies. In Awasse, we need one, Mbau one, and Quelimane one, where potential investors have the capacity to provide assistance with medicines, and the population will buy them,” he concluded.

Mayor says “no government infrastructure” in operation in Mocímboa
The district of Mocímboa da Praia, in the north of Cabo Delgado, was the first target of the terrorists on 5 October 2017, and the insurgents then attacked other parts of the province.
Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for almost six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.
The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and caused around 4,000 deaths, according to the conflict registration project ACLED.
