The aerodrome in Mocímboa da Praia, northern Mozambique, needs new equipment to start operating again, after it was destroyed by armed groups that occupied the area for 15 months, announced Mozambican company Aeroportos de Moçambique (ADM).
“Everything is burnt, everything is in ashes,” said Eduardo Mutereda, chief operating officer of ADM, speaking to public broadcaster Rádio Moçambique.
Mutereda advanced that the aircraft control equipment had been completely damaged during the occupation of the town by rebels.
“We are taking stock and we w.ill make a more detailed study on the needs for a new investment,” he said.
The retaking of the town by the joint forces of Mozambique and Rwanda took place at around 11am on Sunday (10am Lisbon time), after weeks of military operations, with Rwandan forces estimating, from Kigali, casualties of at least 70 people among the insurgents.
Images broadcast by the public channel Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) show a scene of destruction of public and private infrastructure in the town of Mocímboa da Praia, with some houses reportedly spared by the rebels and serving as offices of the insurgents’ leaders.
Following the attacks in Cabo Delgado [which began in 2017], there are more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.
