Traffic circulation between the Magoanine and Malhazine neighborhoods and on Rua da Beira in Hulene in the Mozambican capital, was impaired yesterday morning by non-compliance with the rainwater suction plan from flooded homes for more than two years.
The traffic restrictions also served as a protest against the alleged gunfire attack on Dinis Tivane, a supporter of Venâncio Mondlane.
Residents reportedly erected barricades and burned tires to prevent vehicles from circulating. Many public transport passengers were forced to proceed on foot, while others sought alternative routes to their destinations.
“We couldn’t travel because the roads were blocked. We had to look for alternative routes, which made us late,” reported driver Amélia Martins.
Regarding the alleged attempted murder of Dinis Tivane last Saturday, unknown individuals fired more than 20 shots at his residence, and the protesters claim that the case was not properly investigated by the authorities.
Jacinto Abneiro, one of the protesters, called for urgent clarification of the incident.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters and restore circulation. During the operation, one person was injured in the Magoanine neighborhood, which increased tension among the protesters.
“We were demanding our rights, but the police responded with violence,” complained Vivian Beula, a neighbourhood resident of more than 10 years.
As our reporting team withdrew, police officers of various branches were still deployed in
the places where blockades had been erected.
