Three weeks after the Council of Ministers ordered the suspension of prohibitive communications tariffs and the return of previous ones, mobile telephone operators complied with the recommendation, “eliminating” the controversial tariffs. The update was made simultaneously in the early hours of Monday.
However, instead of reinstating the tariffs previously in force, the operators chose to readjust the tariffs, maintaining some of the “new features” introduced during the implementation of the controversial table.
One of the aspects maintained by operators is the elimination of the offer of bonuses on top-ups, a feature of the previous tariffs. Likewise, unlimited offers were eliminated, and the system for separately selling airtime (for voice calls), SMS and data packages was maintained.
That is, the customer must continue to split their top-up into three instalments: part of the top-up for voice, another for data and likewise for SMSs, unlike in the previous table, in which customers could purchase all services together.
There is also uniformity in the tariffs offered by all three operators, as was the case during the implementation of the controversial revoked table, a fact that reveals the absence of a competitive market in the telecommunications sector.
The controversial telecommunications tariff table approved by the National Communications Institute of Mozambique was in force for just over 30 days. Its withdrawal was due to social pressure.
