Mozambique’s Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, paid a working visit to Cabo Delgado over the weekend, visiting Metuge district on Saturday, where 17,000 victims of armed attacks in the province have sought refuge. The prevention of Covid-19 and malaria in the accommodation centres there were the main messages left by the government official.
Speaking to journalist at Pemba airport on Friday, Minister Tiago announced that the complex which hosted Frelimo’s 10th Congress in 2012 in the Muxara neighbourhood is the new isolation centre for possible coronavirus patients, replacing the 18 de Outubro Health Centre.
Armindo Tiago said that Cabo Delgado was at the centre of his ministry’s and the government’s attention, since, besides being a Covid-19 epicentre, the province is also grappling with cholera and other adversities. He had therefore travelled to the province to find the best way to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
On Saturday, Armindo Tiago visited Metuge district, where 17,000 victims of armed attacks have taken refuge in five government reception centres. The prevention of Covid-19 and malaria in accommodation centres for the internally displaced people were the main messages left by the government official.
The minister of health visited some accommodation centres to observe conditions, and reassured families there that the government was working constantly on helping them get their lives back to normal.
With Mozambique struggling to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, Minister Tiago offered the refugees masks, and explained how to use them correctly. Mosquito nets to fight malaria were also distributed.
The national health minister met health professionals from the districts suffering most from the prevailing climate of insecurity.
On Friday, the health minister had visited the construction works for the Covid-19 patient isolation centre in Pemba. Other destinations included the Metuge District Hospital and the Pemba Gastrointestinal Disease Treatment Centre.
