The tourism sector in Mozambique grew by around 12% last year, Minister of Culture and Tourism Eldevina Materula has announced, adding that hotel occupancy is currently above 80%.
Work is already underway for the 9th edition of the International Tourism Fair-Fikani, scheduled to take place from November 30th to December 3rd at the Mozambique-China Cultural Centre in Maputo city.
Speaking this Wednesday about the tourism fair, Minister Materula gave a positive assessment of the current performance of tourism in the country.
“Last year, the sector grew by 12%, as a result of everything we lost during the pandemic,” she said, adding: “At the moment, the overall occupancy rate stands above 80%, and in some districts has already reached 100%.”
Regarding visa exemption, a measure that came into force in May this year, Minister Materula cited progress and drew attention to a better understanding of the matter.
“We are aware that this work is very important and we are already seeing results, but we need to be capable, as a country, as a sector. We are overseeing developments at some actions at airports to better receive our tourists,” Eldevina Materula said.
