On Monday morning, (14-07) Mozambique’s Minister of Health, Ussene Isse, joined the medical team that performed a thyroidectomy on a 26-year-old patient at Beira Central Hospital, a surgery which successfully removed a giant goitre (a usually benign tumour located in the anterior neck) weighing approximately one kilogram.
The complex clinical case had been monitored at the Beira hospital, and transfer to Maputo Central Hospital was already being considered, given the nature of the surgery.
However, just hours before joining the delegation for the presidential visit to that province, the Minister of Health joined his colleagues at Beira Central Hospital and actively participated in the surgery, which lasted two hours and 15 minutes and culminated in the complete removal of the goitre.
The patient is recovering in the health unit’s surgical ward and is expected to be discharged in the coming days.
The Minister of Health’s participation in clinical procedures during visits to health units is part of his approach to proximity governance, with an emphasis on strengthening trust between health professionals and public service users, as well as on-the-job training for new professionals, especially in the field of surgery.
The Minister of Health remains in the city of Beira, having participated in the popular rally led by President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and in the Council of Ministers session, as well visiting several local health units and talking to health professionals and the public, through local Health Committees.
