The Mozambican Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Daniel Nivagara, has challenged recently graduated students of Maputo’s Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), to seek solutions for the problems the country has been facing.
He was speaking during the graduation ceremony of 458 first degree graduates, 20 masters and four doctors, that took place on Wednesday, in Maputo.
“It is our desire that the graduates work using the knowledge acquired during their training for the good of Mozambique, the region and the world”, said Nivagara.
He stated that the government recognizes the role played by UEM in the development process of higher education, as well as in the construction and development of the country.
For the challenges that Mozambique currently faces, the minister highlighted specific areas in which graduates should implement their skills.
“We desire a higher education whose production of scientific knowledge and practical application in productive activity is useful to our people. The challenge remains the improvement of public health conditions, nutrition, housing, agricultural production, livestock, water, sanitation, and the domestic economy among others”, he said, stressing that the government will continue to pay attention to the issue of financing the activities of higher education institutions.
For his part, the UEM Vice-chancellor, Manuel Guilherme, pointed out the areas that deserve special attention and responsible intervention without selfishness.
“We are aware that some of you are already professionals. However, we recommend that you reflect on the added value that the degrees can bring to the work environment and to society. Face with resilience and responsibility the challenges, from health, climate change, terrorism and organized crime”, he said.
“Avoid being selfish and assume together the valuable mission of building and protecting Mozambique” he added.
