The Manica Provincial Government’s decision to order the temporary suspension of mining activities will only take effect after action is taken by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME).
The provincial government’s position is that mining must be suspended until conditions are met for it to resume in a sustainable manner and without affecting other social and economic activities in the province.
In a meeting with community and religious leaders from Manica district, the epicentre of gold and precious stone mining, Governor Francisca Tomás emphasized that “the situation is serious because the rivers are drying up and the Chicamba dam is silting up”.
On the same occasion, the governor of Manica indicated that the use of chemical substances can be harmful to public health and added that the provincial government hopes to count on the collaboration of community leaders in raising awareness among miners and mining operators so that the activity can be carried out safely and sustainably again.
