Fines imposed on mining companies in Mozambique so far this year have netted about 29 million meticais [US$ 391,139], Inspector-General of Mineral Resources and Energy Obete Matine told the National Council of Inspectors meeting in Maputo today.
Among the irregularities, Matine highlighted lack of production control, and lack of plans concerning emergencies, technical safety and pollution.
In relation to small-scale artisanal mining, Matine says that it is necessary to organise, formalise and legalise the activity, so as not to feed smuggling.
Gems and gold are the most-smuggled items, with the Asian market the main destination.
Matine urged relentless inspection to ensure that all operations were carried out in compliance with the regulations.
