Mozambique’s minister of labour and social security on Tuesday said that the proposals to increase the minimum wage in the country are almost finalised, stating that the consensus on the matter will be submitted to the government later this month.
“The Mozambican Labour Consultative Commission has reached an agreement on the proposals to increase the minimum wage,” said Talapa, speaking to public broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
Talapa said that the working groups discussing the proposals have not yet reached an agreement on the lowest wages that should apply to two sectors of activity and are expected to meet next week to discuss the matter.
She declined to indicate the values of the minimum wage increases already agreed upon by the social partners, noting that the proposals will still be submitted to the cabinet meeting, which is the body with the power to approve the new salaries.
The increase in minimum wages in Mozambique was frozen in 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, which caused stagnation in growth in most business sectors, but more acutely in the restaurant sector.
The last adjustment of minimum wages in Mozambique was made in 2019, with increases ranging from 5% to 12%.
Minimum wages are tabulated according to each sector of activity.
The lowest minimum of 4,390 meticais (€60) corresponds to the agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry sector, while the highest minimum of 12,760.18 meticais (€172) falls to financial services, insurance companies and banks.
