The district of Metuge, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, houses about 12,000 families in villages built for the resettlement of people from further north in the province, displaced from their homes by terrorist attacks.
The Metuge district administrator, Antonio Nandanga, told reporters on Thursday that these households urgently need humanitarian assistance as well as farming tools and seeds so that they can resume activities which will ensure their livelihood.
“Metuge was one of the main destinations for those displaced by terrorist attacks from the north and centre of the province and currently houses 27,658 families,” said Nandanga, only 12,000 of which have so far been installed in the new villages.
Nandanga pointed out that his district also hosts 12,415 other households who moved to Metuge after tropical cyclone Kenneth struck Cabo Delgado in April 2019.
He said that the district authorities are now transferring into the villages those displaced people who had been living in accommodation centres as well as those housed by relatives in Metuge neighbourhoods shortly after their arrival.
