Messica Secondary School in Manica has suspended classes following a wave of fainting and collective delirium among students. Teachers say that violence on the part of students at the time of their “possession” forced the closure of classes.
Fifteen days have passed since the last class at Messica Secondary School.
Izibia Calisto, a student at the school, says that cases of fainting began a month ago and, during the ‘manifestations’, students fall to the floor, attack teachers and cause damage to infrastructure.
“Before it was just with female students, but now it’s with all genders. It starts with fainting and then they start to manifest themselves. Some take off their clothes,” Calisto explained.
Tomás Macaniche, a teacher at the school, says it is the first time he has experienced such a scenario, and that the school had to suspend classes because the situation became uncontrollable.
“We know that there is a divergence between something physical and spiritual. When children are possessed, they change the way they are and act, and become more violent. Classes are suspended when the level of violence among children who are ‘demonstrating’ rises. Generally, when there are just one or two children, it is easy to control, but when it exceeds that number, which is frequently, it is difficult to control,” the teacher says.
Last week, a traditional ceremony was held to stop the wave of collective fainting at the school. Now, the results are awaited, with classes still suspended in the meantime.
