The police in Tete province on Sunday arrested a group of men accused of killing five motorbike taxi drivers and attacking several others to steal their motorbikes.
“They posed as passengers. They asked the ‘moto-taxi drivers’ to take them to a certain place and, with the help of other accomplices on other motorbikes, they organised an ambush,” Deolinda Matsinhe, PRM spokeswoman in the central Mozambican province of Tete told Lusa.
The group, accused of killing at least five motorbike taxi drivers and attacking several others, beat the victims with hammers and stole the motorbikes, according to the spokeswoman.
“Besides the ‘moto-taxi drivers’ who lost heir lives due to blows to the head, we had victims of the action of this group who were seriously injured and others who still managed to get out unharmed, “said Deolinda Matsinhe, who added that the authorities had managed to recover eight motorbikes that were in the possession of this group.
According to the Mozambican police, the group consisted of seven members, five of whom have now been arrested.
“The Mozambican police are working to neutralise the remaining two members of the group and to recover other motorbikes,” Matsinhe said.
