Health units in the capital of Maputo have just seen their medical care capacity increased with the delivery of 22 autoclaves, two ultrasound machines and more than 4,000 uniforms by the State Representation Services.
The equipment allocated to five general hospitals and 17 health centres aims to sterilize medical-surgical materials and utensils, using high pressure steam and temperature, and to perform diagnoses, contributing to improving patient care, in addition to improving the working conditions of health agents.
The Secretary of State for the city of Maputo, Vicente Joaquim, who was speaking to the press at the end of a visit to the José Macamo General Hospital (HGJM), where two of the 22 autoclaves were delivered, explained that they eliminate pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and spores, ensuring the safety of patients and staff and reducing the risk of hospital infections.
He mentioned that the initiative aims to minimize the challenges that the health sector faces daily, reinforce the commitment to allocate more resources to better serve the population and resolve part of the demands of health technicians, related to the lack of material and working conditions.
“Aware that there is still much to be done to improve care in hospitals, we urge everyone to make good use of the allocated material and to install them in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical recommendations,” he said. The director of HGJM, Ermelinda Chamba, agrees that the autoclaves would be extremely important in the surgical centre and other sectors in the health unit, which performs an average of 50 surgical procedures per day. In turn, the clinical director, Luís Walle, said that the two ultrasound machines allocated to the hospital will improve the care of thousands of women in the country’s capital and other districts in Maputo province, who previously depended on just one device to monitor pregnancies.
