Mozambique has now won six medals at the Accra-2023 African Games, after boxer Armando Sigaúque won bronze in the -57kg category quarter-final last night.
Sigaúque secured a first-round technical knockout with a strong blow that caused injury to Ivorian Mweba Idriss, forcing the judges to suspend the fight and award victory to the Mozambican boxer, who thus continues to the semis-finals.
His achievement means Mozambique now has six medals – three silver and three bronze.
The silvers were won by volleyball players Vanessa Muianga and Ana Paula Sinaportar, chess player Donaldo Paiva and boxer Isabel Mulungo (-66 kg).

While the volleyball duo and Donaldo won silver as runners-up in the events they competed in, Isabel Mulungo obtained her medal with direct entry to the final due to insufficient entries in her category.
Alcinda dos Santos (-70kg) and Rady Gramane (-75kg) also won bronze medals with direct entry to the semi-finals, which will be played tomorrow.
Before the men’s fights yesterday, Benilde Macarringue (-57kg), who also benefited from an automatic passage to the “quarters”, lost to the Algerian Chahira Selmouni by one round against two.
In the semis, Alcinda will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Algerian D. Benan and Ivorian M. Brigitte, while Rady Gramane will face Nigerian P Mbata. Two boxers were eliminated in the first round (round of 16): Albino Gabriel (-92kg) and Lázaro Comé (-67kg).
