The government announced in Maputo yesterday that offenders involved in road accidents resulting in death or caused by serious misconduct would be arrested immediately, Notícias reports.
This is one of several extraordinary measures announced in the context of preventing and combating road accidents in the country.
Also subject to immediate arrest will be drivers caught overtaking irregularly, driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h, and other offences under the Highway Code currently in force.
Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) spokesman Ambrósio Sitoe told the press that the more forceful stance in the application of penalties is provided for in the legislation.
The growing number of road accidents in the country are the reason for the strict enforcement of traffic rules as from now, he explained.
