Nampula, Zambézia, and Sofala have recently declared measles outbreaks, following
laboratory confirmation of suspected cases, bringing the total number of affected provinces to five.
Epidemiological data on the measles situation indicate 546 reported cases since the
outbreak began in July. Cabo Delgado has reported 350 cases, Niassa 68, Nampula and
Sofala 41 each, and Zambézia 46.
Cabo Delgado and Niassa have gone over 30 days and two weeks, respectively, without any new cases. The outbreak in Niassa has officially been declared over.
The report also notes ongoing efforts to address the measles outbreak, including additional investigations by teams from the central, provincial, and district levels; targeted vaccination campaigns in areas surrounding outbreak sites; and intensified surveillance, with a focus on affected areas.
A measles immunization campaign was recently conducted in all districts of Cabo Delgado, along with a third round of catch-up vaccinations for unvaccinated and under-immunized children in central and northern regions, targeting 1.7 million and 766,000 children, respectively.
Leonildo Nhampossa, head of the Expanded Immunization Program (PAV), reported that the
vaccination campaign saw satisfactory participation, with 1,692,394 children under the age of 15 vaccinated by the end of the round.
The process involved 1,487 vaccination teams, including healthcare technicians, data entry personnel, logisticians, and community mobilizers, as well as local leaders and other sectors.
