The Mozambique Democratic Movement, (MDM) the third political force in the Mozambican parliament, has claimed that it is the target of political violence in different parts of the country by the ruling party, the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo).
“It has been 45 years of an independent country, but the minds of the ruling party members continue to act in an intimidating and criminal manner against their political opponents,” said Sande Carmona, spokesperson for the MDM.
According to Carmona, the MDM has suffered acts of vandalisation led by influential individuals of the ruling party.
The most recent episodes of political intolerance happened on Friday morning in the district of Mabote, Inhambane province (south of the country), where individuals linked to the ruling party vandalised the MDM vehicle, which at the time was carrying a work brigade headed by its provincial political delegate.
“The individuals destroyed the car’s four tires and broke the windows,” he said.
That same morning, a group of young people from the Mozambican Youth Organisation (OJM), a Frelimo structure, camped in the village of Macuácua, on the border between the districts of Mabote and Funhalouro, wielding stones, stakes and other blunt objects intent on attacking the MDM brigade,” he said.
Despite all the complaints filed by the MDM to the police, no case was made, nor were any suspects detained due to acts of vandalism in MDM branch offices and party material, he said.
In contact with Lusa, Frelimo distanced itself from the MDM charges.
“This is not our line, it was not our members who did this. Frelimo is a peace party. It is not among our intentions to disturb the work of any party on the ground,” said Frelimo spokesperson Caifadine Manasse.
