The National Council of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Mozambique’s third-largest political formation, is scheduled to meet in the first half of April, its National Political Commission decided on Saturday, just hours after the funeral of former party president Daviz Mbepo Simango, who died on 22 February.
The National Council meets between congresses, usually twice a year, and will in April have the power to deliberate on the holding of a congress, where Daviz Simango’s replacement as party president will be elected.
MDM Secretary-General José Domingos will manage the party until congress elects a new leader.
According to MDM statutes, “the Congress is held ordinarily every five years, and must be convened by the National Council at least 90 days in advance”. However, it is worth mentioning another section which states: “Congress may meet extraordinarily by convening the National Council, or at the request of the party president, with at least 30 days’ notice”.
Speaking at the end of the meeting on Saturday, Luís Boavida, former MDM secretary general and spokesman for the Commission session, called on party members and supporters to remain calm and not to be carried away by information of doubtful reliability. He urged members to confirm any and all information with official party channels.
The last MDM congress, the second since the party was founded took place in Nampula, in December, 2017.
In its first extraordinary session, the National Political Commission decreed 15 days of mourning within the MDM nationally, counting from February 22, 2021, with the party flag flying at half-mast.
