Members of the MDM, Mozambique’s third-largest political party, who gathered in Maputo yesterday, decided that the involvement of women and youth, who form the majority of the population, must be among the strategies used to persuade the electorate to vote for the party in next year’s elections.
The MDM’s Head of Information, Augusto Pelembe, said party activists from the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo were already planning for victory, with the MDM Women’s League’s Sónia Mboa claiming that the involvement of women would be central to success.
The one-day meeting took place in the Mozambican capital almost two months after the fifth municipal elections, in which the MDM won only the municipality of Beira, while the ruling Frelimo party won 44 municipalities and Renamo eight.
