Seven electoral registration brigades in Nampula have been adversely affected by the fear of attacks by terrorist groups on the border between Nampula and Cabo Delgado.
Consequently, the vice-president of the National Elections Commission, Fernando Mazanga, says that ways to compensate the brigades for lost time need to be considered.
Electoral registration ends on April 28, but in the province of Nampula, specifically in the administrative post of Lúrio, in Memba, seven brigades were unable to operate for some time.
Fernando Mazanga, who was working in Nampula monitoring the process, said: “We need to think about how to compensate the seven brigades in the Lúrio administrative post, which apparently have not registered voters for more than two weeks due to fear of terrorists.”
Out of the 1,857,534 voters expected to be registered in Nampula, as of the 21st of this month, 1,685,451 voters had already been registered, corresponding to 91%. Fernando Mazanga said that lack of funds was preventing the Provincial Elections Commission from supervising the ongoing electoral registration process.
