Vitória Cristina Artur Timbe, the president of the Municipal Council of Vila de Marromeu, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, died in Beira Central Hospital on Friday (28-04).
The funeral ceremonies took place this Tuesday, May 2, starting at 10:00 a.m. with a wake in the São João Baptista Catholic Church of Matacuane, in Beira, followed by burial at the Santa Isabel cemetery in Beira city at 2:00 p.m..
Marromeu District Administrator Henriqueta do Rosário, declared that the Vitória Timbe had been noteworthy in addressing development in the sugar-producing town, especially the rehabilitation of access roads, schools and health units, the expansion of the electricity network and humanitarian assistance for the elderly and vulnerable.
Elected in the second round of the October 2018 elections, Mayor Timbe was serving her first term in the Municipal Council of Marromeu, whose assembly is made up of 17 members, eight from Frelimo, the party in power in the country, an equal number from Renamo, the largest opposition party, plus one seat occupied by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third-largest political force in parliament.
Marromeu is notable for its sugar production, managed by Companhia de Sena (formerly the Sena Sugar Estates), and for its agriculture, on the banks of the Zambezi River.
In general, the district of Marromeu is rich in fauna, having the largest buffalo reserve in the country, in addition to the wild game ‘coutadas’, where sports hunting is regularly practised by British and South African visitors.
