Matola Municipal Council is mapping [previously] unused land usurped by locals, mainly in the administrative post of Machava, to put an end to the phenomenon and prevent it from happening in other neighbourhoods, Notícias reports..
Chief among the neighbourhoods where land is illegally occupied by the population are Tsalala, Matola-Gare, Mathlemele, Machava-sede, Siduava and parts of Matola-Rio.
Councillor for Territorial Planning, Aurélio Salomão, warned that there were reports of landowners being threatened by Matola residents.
“We are implementing a plan for the legal division of land in the Muhalazi and Ngolhoza neighbourhoods. Therefore, we must first tackle the demarcation and occupation of urban land without documentary procedures,” he explained.
Salomão said unauthorized constructions would immediately be embargoed and demolished as part of the reorganization of spaces illegally occupied by residents.
“We will invest in the requalification, urban planning and territorial reorganization of idle land,” he stressed.
Ivan Machaeie, a resident of the Machava-sede neighbourhood, said that residents were only usurping plots because of the lack of opportunities to acquire land legally.
In the city of Maputo, where irregular land occupation also occurs, Councillor for Planning, Territorial Organization and Environment, Idálio Juvane, said that private property in the Albazine and Chiango neighbourhoods had been invaded since as recently as last week.
“We urge residents to report acts of land invasion to local administrative structures and we urge the owners of these plots to proceed with their occupation in accordance with the municipal bylaws,” he urged.
