The sugar factory in Marromeu, in Sofala, resumed operations on Tuesday after a 10-day stoppage caused by a fire that destroyed the plant’s control room.
The manufacturing unit lost over 20 million meticais when around 6,000 tons of sugarcane that had already been prepared for processing ended up rotting due to the stoppage.
The financial director of Companhia de Sena, Luc Burton, explained that around 600 tons of sugar would have been produced.
Interviewed by telephone by Radio Mozambique, Burton said that the company has decided to extend the current production campaign, scheduled to end on 30 October, for a further ten days.

An internal inquiry determined that the fire, which destroyed computer equipment in the control room at the sugar plant, was caused by an electrical fault.
