The oldest living Mozambican musician to date, Moisés da Conceição Manjate, who died today at the age of 104, was largely responsible for the evolution and stylization of the “marrabenta” musical genre in Mozambique.
His creative genius, innovative capacity and entrepreneurship is present in the history of urban music and in the popular Mozambican songbook, immortalised by the timeless hit “Elisa Gomara Saia”.
His death leaves the world of Mozambican music enveloped in profound sadness.
Manjate, whose genius shaped Mozambique’s music scene, departed leaving not only an eternal musical legacy, but also a family of talented musicians, who inherited his love for the art.
Born on February 4, 1920, Moisés Ribeiro da Conceição Manjate began his musical journey as a humble, self-taught guitarist. His influence in the Mozambican cultural scene was felt from the very beginnings of marrabenta, especially as a founding member and prominent figure of the Djambo Orchestra.
His contribution to the evolution and stylization of this iconic musical genre is undeniable, and his masterpiece, “Elisa Gomara Saia”, will remain a monument to his genius.
