The construction phase of the electricity transmission line between Maputo and Temane, covering a distance of approximately 580 kilometres, has been completed. This will be followed by the commissioning and current transmission phases.
The works were initially scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023, but this deadline was later postponed to July of last year. Adriano Jonas, the project manager, confirmed to Notícias that all works on the line were completed on 23 December of last year.
Of the six planned project batches, three were related to the construction of the lines and other three to the installation of substations.
“On 6 December, we began energising the Maputo-Matalana substation at 400 kilovolts and gradually energised the Maputo-Matalana section and, consequently, from Matalana to Chibuto. We then made the connection from Chibuto to Pambarra, and then the substation itself. On 23 December, the connection of the line to Temane was completed,” Jonas explained.
At the moment, some correction work is underway on the second section, which includes the line between Chibuto, Gaza province, and Pambarra, in Inhambane, but Jonas gave assurances that this was not compromising in any way, since the end of the works is measured by the possibility of energization, which had already been achieved.
Adriano Jonas explained that the equipment work on the second batch was not completed last month due to the negative impact of the post-election demonstrations, which forced the suspension of activities.
Meanwhile, he said that all modernizations are at an 85% execution level, and it is expected that this process will also be concluded in the next three months.
The completion of the second batch is essential for the full operation of the power line when the Temane power station is operational.
Work on this infrastructure began with the construction of batch six in February 2021 and ended with the completion of batch four – the construction of the Temane-Mpambarra line, which had started in January 2022.
